About

Several studies all over the world were done on how to mitigate the replacement of fossil fuels. The fact that Global warming and CO2 emissions are changing the world was not the only focus for these studies. Several studies showed that the end the of fossil fuel era is fast nearing its end.

"The Stone Age came to an end not for a lack of stones and the oil age will end, but not for a lack of oil."
Ahmed Zaki Yamani, 2000

For those still sceptical about both of these well published phenomena`s, there is one indicator that is an indisputable fact: The ever rising cost of energy. Similar to the Stone Age that ended with a lot of stones left, so the fossil fuel era will also end, mainly due to the fact that there will be cheaper energy sources to use.

Many of these studies focused on how renewables might replace fossil fuels, and many studies focused on 2050 as a key timeline.

Studies refer to all sorts of mathematical projections based on the growth of world population. The increase in energy use that the world will need from primary energy sources is in the order of 250 000 000 GWh. (Grundy, 2008. Shell)

If we convert that value to Joules, the primary unit for Energy, it is:

900 000 000 000 Giga Joules or 0.9 x 10 to the power 21, Joules

The Engineering units for:
1,000 is Kilo (10 to the power 3)
1,000,000 in Mega (10 to the power 6)
1,000,000,000 in Giga (10 to the power 9)
and
1,000
,000,000,000,000,000,000 is Zetta (10 to the power 21)

The primary amount of energy needed by the Year 2050 will therefore be 0.9 ZettaJoule.

Rounded to 1 ZettaJoule
