Key features
- Shunts are used to measure the current the battery is delivering to the load or receiving from the charger.
- In a Lithium Battery environment, the BMS will protect the Battery from over-current.
- The BMS system also measure the current reading to calculate the State of Charge (SOC)
Types of Shunts
There are mainly three types of shunts
- Resistance shunts
This method uses a very low-value resistor that remains stable across the shunt's specified current range. The BMS is measuring the voltage drop across the shunt resistor and is using Ohm's Law to calculate the current.
- HALL Shunts
A Hall effect sensor measures the magnetic field generated by the current as it flows "through" the hole/cavity of the Shunt. It converts this magnetic field strength into a voltage output without requiring direct electrical contact.
- New Generation IS0 26262 ASIL certified Hybrid Shunts
ISO 26262 is the international standard for the functional safety of electrical and electronic (E/E) systems in road vehicles. The Hybrid shunts combining the Resistance and Hall to deliver two readings to secure that the current reading the BMS is using is correct
