EMS Design & Remote BESS Monitoring
The ZettaJoule EMS sits between your battery system, inverters and site loads as the orchestration layer that makes a BESS behave predictably and profitably.
It ingests real-time data from the BMS, inverters, meters and plant equipment, then applies site-specific control logic to decide when to charge, discharge or hold power, and at what setpoints.
Our EMS architecture is modular and protocol-agnostic, supporting common interfaces such as Modbus TCP/RTU, CAN, and digital I/O for:
- Inverters and PCS units
- Battery management systems (BMS)
- Revenue and sub-metering
- Generator controllers and ATS panels
- PV inverters and weather stations
External signals such as grid constraints, TOU tariffs, demand charges and utility dispatch commands can be integrated to optimise operation over the full lifecycle of the asset.
ZettaJoule offers international remote monitoring of EMS-controlled BESS assets using VTScada over secure VPN connections.
Each site is presented as a dedicated VTScada project, with clear single-line diagrams, live power flows, SOC and state indications, alarms and key KPIs.
Authorised operators and ZettaJoule engineers can:
- View real-time status and historical trends from anywhere with authenticated access
- Acknowledge alarms and support local teams with guided fault-finding
- Review energy performance and mode effectiveness (peak shaving, arbitrage, backup, etc.)
- Coordinate changes to EMS strategies under controlled change management
This approach keeps site control local, while exposing safe, read/write points for remote support and optimisation.
| Aspect | On-Site EMS Only | EMS + VTScada Remote Monitoring |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Local HMI or web interface on site network | Local HMI plus remote dashboards accessible to authorised stakeholders |
| Alarm Handling | Handled by site staff when present | Handled by site staff plus ZettaJoule support engineers for escalation |
| Trend Data | Stored locally, may be difficult to export | Centralised logging with easier access to historical trends and reports |
| Change Management | Local configuration changes only | Structured remote support for EMS tuning and logic updates |
| Multi-Site View | Per-site only | Fleet-level view across multiple BESS installations |
Our EMS and remote monitoring solutions are designed with a defence-in-depth mindset.
- Segmented control networks with clearly defined perimeters between IT and OT
- VPN-based remote access with strong authentication and encryption
- Protocol-level hardening and minimal exposed services
- Principle of least privilege applied to user accounts and roles
We work with your IT and cybersecurity teams to align EMS integration with existing policies and standards.
Reliability is treated as a design requirement, not an afterthought.
- Industrial-grade hardware and operating systems selected for EMS and gateways
- Regular backups of EMS configurations and VTScada projects
- Clear restart and recovery procedures for power and communications outages
- Alerting pathways so the right people are notified when something needs attention
This ensures your BESS does what it should, when it should — even under non-ideal conditions.
The same EMS platform can implement a wide range of operating strategies, from straightforward backup to complex tariff-driven optimisation.
Below are examples of common scenarios we configure for commercial and industrial BESS projects. In practice, most sites combine several of these behaviours under a single coordinated control strategy.
Whether you are specifying a new containerised BESS or upgrading controls on an existing installation, our EMS specialists can help you define the right architecture, operating modes and monitoring approach.
Share a few details about your site, constraints and objectives, and we will come back with practical options and next steps.
